Even further away is the ancient Olympia, built near the river Alpheus. A sacred place dedicated to the god Zeus in whose honor, every four years, the Olympics were held. The site currently contains the ruins of the Temple of Zeus, the Temple of Hera, the parliament of Olympia, Prytaneion, the Ancient Stadium, the Gymnasium, the Palestra, the Leonidaion, the workshop of Phidias and many other buildings associated with the archaeological area.
It is worth visiting the ancient Nemea and the Sanctuary of Zeus who are less than half an hour by car. Nemea took placeat the Stadium every four years, in honor of Zeus and nowadays there is a willful try to revive of the games. In the temple today, three columns are left, but a huge effort is made to make full restoration of the site. Apart from the beauty of the area and you can taste the famous wines of Nemea.
