The archaeological site of Heraion is located in the cape of Melagkavi (western end of Perahora peninsula). The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The settlement of the Heraion, west of Lake Eschatiotidos (modern Vouliagmeni), experienced a period of prosperity during the Archaic period (7th-6th century BC.). Excavations by the British Archaeological School unearthed, among others, the market, the temples of Hera Akraia and Hera Limenia (with rich findings), two-storey stoa (with Doric columns on the ground floor and Ionic upstairs), residential foundations, parts of fortification works and roads, water reservoirs and fountains.
